Marvel Games is the publishing brand for video games based on Marvel properties, and is the video games division of Marvel Entertainment. Before the incorporation of Marvel Games, video games based on Marvel released from 1982 to 1985 were handled by Marvel Comics Group, and Marvel video games from 1986 to 1998 were handled by Marvel Entertainment Group, whilst video games based on Marvel released from 1999 to 2008 were handled directly by Marvel Enterprises.

Established in March 2009, the label handles the licensing of Marvel intellectual properties to video game developers and publishers. After The Walt Disney Company acquisition of Marvel Entertainment in 2009,^[1] Marvel Games assets were integrated into Disney Interactive, whilst the division itself remained under Marvel Entertainment.

The Marvel Games branding was revived after Disney discontinued their interactive media business as a first party developer and publisher by shutting down Disney Interactive Studios, opting to license their intellectual properties for video games instead.^[2] Since then, Marvel Games has been involved with publishing and distribution of all Marvel related video games with third parties.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes is a Lego-themed action-adventurevideo game developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows,^[1] and published by Feral Interactive for OS X.^[2] The game features gameplay similar to other Lego titles, such as Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, alternating between various action-adventure sequences and puzzle solving scenarios. The handheld version of the game by TT Fusion was released under the title Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril for iOS, Android, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.^[3]

Lego Marvel Super Heroes is currently the bestselling Lego video game of all time.^[4] A spin-off to the Lego Marvel series titled Lego Marvel's Avengers was released on 26 January 2016, and a sequel titled Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 was released on 14 November 2017.

Gameplay[edit]

Following the gameplay style of past Lego titles, players are able to control 180 characters from the Marvel Universe, each with their own unique abilities.^[5][6] For example, Spider-Man can swing on his webs and use his spider-sense while the Hulk, who is larger than the standard minifigures, can throw large objects, as well as shrink down into Bruce Banner to access computers.^[7][8]Galactus was chosen as the main antagonist in the game.^[9] According to game director, Arthur Parsons, and producer, Phil Ring, one of the main settings of Lego Marvel Super Heroes is a Lego version of New York City.^[10] In addition, a Lego version of Asgard was created.^[11]

The creative team has also incorporated Marvel Comics co-creator Stan Lee in the game. He is a part of missions called 'Stan Lee in Peril' (similar to 'Citizen in Peril' missions from previous games). He is also a playable character and has several of the other characters' abilities (such as Spider-Man's webbing, a combination of Human Torch's heat beam and Cyclops' optic blast, Mr. Fantastic's ability to grapple, Wolverine's adamantium skeleton when all health is depleted, and the ability to transform into a Hulk-like version of Lee).^[6]

Players can also explore the Marvel version of New York City, though they can only use a specific character and access buildings after the campaign is complete. Side missions are narrated by Deadpool^[6] and take place in buildings with their own storylines. There are a total of 15 missions in the main single-player campaign, followed by 12 side missions.^[12]

Many of the main LEGO minifigure characters are based on their appearance from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tony Stark is modeled on Robert Downey Jr., Nick Fury is modeled on Samuel L. Jackson, whilst Agent Phil Coulson is both modeled on and voiced by Clark Gregg, Captain America is modeled on Chris Evans, Black Widow is modeled on Scarlett Johansson, Bruce Banner is modeled on Mark Ruffalo, Clint Barton is modeled on Jeremy Renner, Loki is modeled on Tom Hiddleston, Thor is modeled on Chris Hemsworth, and Maria Hill is modeled on Cobie Smulders.

Plot[edit]

Galactus dispatches his servant, Silver Surfer, to travel through the universe, in search for planets for him to consume. When the Surfer arrives on Earth, he is intercepted by Iron Man and S.H.I.E.L.D., but the Surfer is then suddenly knocked out of the sky by Doctor Doom, and his board shatters into several 'Cosmic Bricks'. Doom captures the powerless Surfer and brings him to his Castle Doom in Latveria, where Doom is comunicating with an imprisoned Loki and together they come up with a plan to find all the Cosmic Bricks and use them to create the 'Doom Ray of Doom', which would allow Doom to defeat Galactus and then take over the world. However, S.H.I.E.L.D. learns about the bricks as well, and Nick Fury unites Earth's heroes to find all the bricks before Doom does.

Doom hires various villains to find the bricks for him, starting with Abomination and Sandman, who hold Grand Central Station at ransom for a Cosmic Brick. Iron Man and Hulk show up at the station, with Spider-Man joining them later on, and togheter they manage to defeat the two villains, who are subsequently imprisoned in a nearby maximum security prison called the Raft, while Nick Fury leaves the Cosmic Brick in Mister Fantastic's care at the Baxter Building. Mister Fantastic and Captain America arrive at the building shortly after to examine the Cosmic Brick, but find it under attack by Doctor Octopus, who steals the brick and leaves his Octobots behind to keep the heroes busy. After destroying them, Mister Fantastic and Captain America chase after a fleeing Doctor Octopus across several rooftops, with their battle going through the Daily Bugle as well, where Peter Parker, Spider-Man's alter-ego, sees them and suits up as Spider-Man to lend a hand. The three heroes eventually battle Doctor Octopus in Times Square and manage to defeat him, but he tosses the brick to Green Goblin, who takes it to Oscorp. Fury sends Black Widow and Hawkeye to get it back, with Spider-Man joining them later on. They eventually confront Green Goblin in his office, but he opens a trapdoor that sends the heroes to Oscorp's underground lab, where they are forced to fight Venom and his symbiote-infected scientists. Although the heroes defeat Venom, the Goblin escapes with the brick via helicopter.

Later, Iron Man tracks down the Surfer's cosmic signature to Latveria, meaning that Doom is the mastermind villain seeking all the Cosmic Bricks, and informs S.H.I.E.L.D. of it, but they are all suddenly alerted of a prison breakout at the Raft, led by Magneto, Mystique, and Sabretooth, who have been hired by Doom to release Loki, so that he could personally help him with his plans. Iron Man and Hulk are once again sent to intervene and they run into Wolverine, who has tracked Sabretooth's scent down here. The three heroes work together to battle the escaped prisoners, including supervillains like Whiplash and the Leader, and eventually confront Magneto, but he escapes, not before destroying Iron Man's armor and releasing more villains: Abomination, Red Skull, Rhino, and Carnage. Forced to let them escape in order to go after Magneto, Hulk and Wolverine battle him and Sabretooth inside an elevator shaft, but the two villains run away and the heroes follow them outside the prison, where they are ambushed by Abomination. Magneto escapes in a helicopter with Mystique, leaving Sabretooth behind in a decoy helicopter, while Hulk and Wolverine manage to defeat Abomination and destroy Sabretooth's helicopter. In the aftermath, most of the escaped prisoners and villains are returned to their cells, but, unbeknownst to anybody, Loki has managed to escape.

While Wolverine leaves to track Magneto down, Captain America and Tony Stark head over to Stark Tower, for Stark to don a new Iron Man armor, but discover that the entire building has been taken over by Loki, Mandarin, Aldrich Killian, and his army of Extremis soldiers, who have hacked J.A.R.V.I.S. and turned the tower's security system against the heroes. The duo are forced to fight their way through the Extremis soldiers and security system, with Stark eventually donning his Mark 42 armor and bringing J.A.R.V.I.S. back to normal. The heroes then confront Loki, Mandarin, and Killian, and discover that they arrived at the tower to steal Stark's arc reactor. While Loki escapes with the reactor, Iron Man and Captain America follow Mandarin and Killian to the tower's balcony, where Mandarin dons Stark's Hulkbuster armor and Killian summons his remaining Extremis soldiers to battle the heroes, but they are both ultimately defeated, with the Hulkbuster getting destroyed in the process. Meanwhile, Fury contacts some outside help for an approaching threat and plans an attack on Doom's castle in Latveria, while Mister Fantastic leaves to find the rest of the Fantastic Four, to help with the current situation at hand.

Fury tracks down the arc reactor's signature signal to a HYDRA base beneath the Empire State Building and sends Black Widow and Hawkeye to investigate. Once there, the duo discover that Captain America and Wolverine have already arrived before them and cleared the way of HYDRA troops, and soon encounter HYDRA's leaders, Red Skull and Arnim Zola, but they run away and leave numerous HYDRA soldiers behind to deal with the heroes. With the help of the Human Torch, they manage to defeat them, and then proceed through the rest of the base, eventually reaching a room with a portal to Asgard, powered by the arc reactor stolen by Loki, who is also present. After knocking Black Widow and Hawkeye unconscious with his sorcery, Loki escapes through the portal, just as Captain America and Wolverine show up and help Human Torch fight Red Skull and the remaining HYDRA soldiers. The heroes defeat Red Skull and knock him into the portal, which electrocutes him, but also destroys the portal. Meanwhile, Galactus is approaching Earth, consuming every planet in his way, and S.H.I.E.L.D. detects his presence, but Fury chooses not to tell the heroes about him yet.

While S.H.I.E.L.D. cleans up following the battle at the HYDRA base, Fury asks for Thor's help, the only one who can take the heroes to Asgard to stop Loki. Captain America, Wolverine and Human Torch meet up with Thor and they all travel to Asgard using the Bifrost bridge, only to discover that Loki is now commanding the Frost Giants and has taken over Asgard. After fighting their way through the Frost Giants, the heroes eventually arrive at the royal palace and confront Loki, who has stolen the Tesseract from Odin's vault and uses it to enhance his powers, unleashing the Destroyer armor on the heroes. After disabling the Destroyer and defeating Loki, who manages to escape, the heroes are divided on what to do with the Tesseract; Wolverine ultimately steals it and brings it to the X-Mansion, believing that Professor X could unlock its secrets, but, unbeknownst to him, Loki learns about this and informs Doom, who dispatches the Brotherhood of Mutants to attack the mansion and find the Tesseract, as he needs it to power his Doom Ray of Doom. After saving the endangered students, Jean Grey and Cyclops battle Magneto's generic mutant Acolytes through the mansion, along the way recruiting other X-Men members, such as Storm and Iceman, and fending off Brotherhood members Toad and Pyro. The X-Men eventually reach the Cerebro room and meet Professor X, who has the Tesseract in his possession, but it turns out to be Mystique in disguise, who then escapes with Magneto, leaving Juggernaut behind to deal with the heroes. With the help of Beast, the X-Men manage to defeat Juggernaut, but Magneto and Mystique escape with the Tesseract.

Tracking down the Tesseract's signature to Latveria, Fury finally initiates the attack on Doom's castle, joined by the Fantastic Four - Mister Fantastic, Human Torch, Invisible Woman, and the Thing. After tearing through Doom's defenses and Doombots, as well as defeating Green Goblin, the heroes confront Doctor Doom, who is holding a prototype Doom Ray. Although Doom is unable to make it work, Loki manages to knock the heroes unconscious with his sorcery and then escapes alongside Doom, letting him believe that the Doom Ray worked; still, the heroes rescue Silver Surfer once they recover. Shorlty after, S.H.I.E.L.D. tracks Doom down aboard a stolen S.H.I.E.L.D. submarine and Fury sends Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Thor to deal with him. Aboard the submarine, the heroes battle numerous A.I.M. soldiers and eventually defeat MODOK, but the submarine begins to sink and Doom escapes aboard a smaller sub. Iron Man, Spider-Man and Thor are rescued by Jean Grey, who uses her powers to help them breathe and walk underwater, and the heroes board Doom's sub and corner him inside.

As they all return to New York, Magneto brings the Statue of Liberty to life and uses it to attack the sub, saving Doom, who then escapes in his jet, while Magneto, joined by Mystique and Mastermind, leads the statue on an attack on a Roxxon Industries power plant, to steal its nuclear core, which Doom needs for his plans. Fury sends Hulk, Mister Fantastic, and Wolverine to stop him, but they crash-land inside the plant. Although they manage to exit it, Magneto arrives at the plant and has the Statue of Liberty stomp on the heroes, before stealing the core. However, the heroes survive and begin climbing the statue to reach its head, where they defeat Mastermind, but Magneto then has the Statue of Liberty throw the head into the city, to get rid of the heroes, while he continues marching with the statue towards Savage Land, where he plans to use the stolen nuclear core to power his space station, Asteroid M. After learning of this, Fury sends Captain America and the Thing there to stop him, but they arrive too late, as Magneto has already tossed the core into Asteroid M, which also powered the island's security system. After parachuting themselves to the island, the duo make their way past the security system and encounter Storm, who helps them battle Magneto's mutant acolytes, as well as the islands' Velociraptors. The heroes eventually arrive at Asteroid M, where they defeat Magneto, as well as Rhino, but it turns out that Magneto was actually Mystique in disguise, while the real Magneto launches Asteroid M into space.

While Doctor Doom and Loki arrive on Asteroid M and continue building the Doom Ray, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Thor, having just escaped from the ruins of the submarine, learn of what has happened and volunteer to board Asteroid M and stop the villains' plan. Using one of Stark's jets, the heroes board the space station, but Doom and Loki are alerted to their pressence and send Magneto to deal with them. After fighting their way through the last of Magneto's acolytes, the heroes confront Magneto and manage to defeat him, before sending him flying back to Earth, where he crashes into the Baxter Building. Meanwhile, Silver Surfer is still to weak to tell Fury about Doom and Loki's plan or how to stop Galactus, and Fury unites all of Earth's heroes to stop Doom for good. On Asteroid M, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Thor confront Doom and Loki, who have just finished work on the Doom Ray, but Doom incapacitates Iron Man and Thor, just as Captain America, the Thing, and Storm show up and aid Spider-Man in fighting Doctor Doom, who is secretly mind-controlled by Loki. Together, the heroes manage to defeat Doom and the Thing sends him flying back to Earth, but Loki reveals himself as the real villain mastermind, having manipulated Doom into building the Doom Ray for him, which is actually a craft made out of the Cosmic Bricks and powered by the Tesseract, that would allow him to control Galactus and destroy both Earth and Asgard. Galactus then finally arrives to consume Earth, but Loki boards the craft and uses it to mind-control him into destroying Asteroid M with everybody still aboard, before heading to destroy Earth, starting with New York.

All the heroes aboard Asteroid M land safely on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, where Nick Fury, realizing the current threat that Earth is dealing with, decides to unite all the heroes with the villains to stop Galactus and Loki for good. After Fury speaks with Doctor Doom and Iron Man and Thor meet up with Magneto and Abomination in Central Park, the heroes - Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor, Mister Fantastic, Human Torch, Cyclops, Storm, and Fury - and the villains - Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Venom, Abomination, Magneto, and Mystique - all join forces aboard the Helicarrier to battle the mind-controlled Galactus and Loki. Together, they are able to open a large portal and toss and Galactus and Loki into it, while Thor destroys the craft with his hammer; Galactus and Loki are teleported to an unknown part of space, where the former prepares to eat Loki as revenge for having controlled him. On Earth, Fury retrieves the Tesseract and the heroes decide to give the villains a head start to avoid capture, as a reward for having helped save the world. With all the Cosmic Bricks collected and reassembled back into his board, Silver Surfer recovers his powers and, after thanking the heroes for all their help, departs into deep space, promising to lead Galactus away from Earth.

In a mid-credits scene, Fury oversees the repair of the Statue of Liberty, when the Guardians of the Galaxy - Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon - show up, having been called earlier by Fury to help fend off Galactus, if the heroes and villains couldn't have defeated him on their own. Aferr Fury apologizes to the Guardians, Star-Lord warns him that there is something else threatening Earth. Shortly after, while having lunch with the construction crew, Fury encounters Black Panther, who was looking for his cat Mr. Tiddles. After finding him, Black Panther tells Fury that the people of Wakanda thank him for uniting the heroes to stop the villains' schemes and save Earth.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes received generally positive reviews upon release. Among its strengths, reviewers cited its humor, variety of missions, characters, and open-world gameplay. According to review aggregating website GameRankings, Lego Marvel Super Heroes received an average review score of 84.00% based on 15 reviews; according to Metacritic, it received an average review score of 83/100 based on 22 reviews, indicating 'generally favorable reviews'.

Steve Butts of IGN gave the game a 9 out of 10, praising it for being: 'the best thing to happen to Marvel games since 2006's Marvel: Ultimate Alliance'. He added, 'It's a warm and witty, multi-layered approach to the brand that ties in hundreds of Marvel's most iconic characters, settings, and stories.'^[29] Steve Hannley of Hardcore Gamer gave the game a 4/5, calling it 'one of the best Marvel games this generation'.^[34]Game Informer gave the game a 9 out of 10, while Polygon gave the game an 8.5 out of 10.^[26][31] GameZone's Matt Liebl gave the PS4 version a 9/10, stating 'On a console filled with shooters like Killzone and Call of Duty, TT Games' Lego Marvel Super Heroes presents a nice break from the complex sports titles and intense shooters that overrun the console.'^[35]

Though the game was generally well-received, it garnered some criticism, often regarding the frame-rate and the repetitive nature of the missions. Chris Barylick from GameSpot noted that, 'Lego Marvel Super Heroes looks and sounds lovely, but its presentation quirks often prove distracting. Certain characters repeat the same lines of dialogue ad infinitum, which can get tiresome; there are only so many times you can hear Tony Stark proudly describe himself as 'Tony Stark..genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist' before it gets old.' He also noted that 'the frame rate occasionally drops, particularly upon entering co-op mode, and a small black box occasionally appeared in the air over my characters' heads towards the end of the game. At one point, my character would respawn directly next to his still-present corpse, while a boss fight against Red Skull had me wandering around the room for several minutes looking for scenery to smash before I realized I had encountered a bug and had to restart the level.' (It has since been proven that this isn't actually a bug, you just need to interact with Red Skull) Asides from the negatives, Barylick gave the game a 7/10, praising its humor, open-world and variety.^[36]

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment President David Haddad has stated that Lego Marvel Super Heroes is the bestselling Lego video game of all time.^[4]

A sequel titled Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 was announced to be in development on 15 May 2017 and was released for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 14 November 2017.
