LEGO Racers is a typical by-the-numbers arcade racing game, featuring the usual complement of tracks (that are unlocked via winning), multiple environments and secret areas. It follows the Wipeout-style of collecting a single-use powerup, but enhances the model somewhat by allowing you to pick up power-up modifiers that change their properties. This adds a little bit of strategy to the usual reflex-oriented racing.

And what challenging racing it is. Perhaps to the detriment to the extreme bottom-end of the age scale (the game is for folks 6 and up), the game is surprisingly tough. Until you tune your LEGO-mobile, it’s unlikely you’ll make it to the last race. Yes, you get to build your own cars (or modify existing ones), and there’s actually enough physics modeling going on for it to make some difference (lighter cards handle better and accelerate more quickly while heavier cars have a higher top speed and slower acceleration).

Whether or not it was wise to make a mass-market game requiring 3D hardware will be answered by the sales figures, but the game is quite attractive in all of its Direct3D glory. It’s blocky, but that’s actually a complement—the artists do a fantastic job at making the environments look LEGO-y. And the music is feel-good to the extreme, and manages it without being annoying. You’ll be humming the theme song for hours, much to the chagrin of friends and co-workers.

If all “kids” software was as good as this, we wouldn’t even need to make fun of the category. Folks, if your kids like LEGOs, you still have your own residual LEGO-fetish (go ahead, it’s OK to admit it) or are a fan of race games, this is a superb addition to your software collection.

Lego Racers 2 is a game developed by Attention to Detail and published by Lego Software in September 2001 for the PC and PlayStation 2, and in November 2001 for the Game Boy Advance.

Plot

After losing in the first game, Rocket Racer is depressed, and then gets racing again after finding out about the world of Xalax, where he becomes the galactic racing champion. It's up to the player to explore 5 new worlds and defeat Rocket Racer.

Why it Sucks

1. Unexciting main menu music.
2. Awkward vehicle building controls. What happened to the great interface from the first game?
   • Speaking of vehicles, some of the premade vehicles are extremely dumb looking.
3. Apart from Sam Sinister's car, there are no unlockables.
4. The beginning of the game has a task where Sparky tells you to go to the beach, and then he tells you to go back to town, while you were just in the town a few minutes ago.
5. The game's tracks are open world, but it's extremely distracting since you can talk to people during races if you press Shift.
6. When your vehicle is damaged enough it starts to lose bricks. When it is completely destroyed you start racing on foot.
7. Bad selection of items.
   • On top of that, the item bricks are randomized instead of being color-coded like in the first game, and there's no option to upgrade the items with power-up bricks.
8. The introduction cutscene is too long. You can speed it up, though.
9. The final race with Rocket Racer is too easy, particularily because the AI racers' programming is flawed and cannot drive as fast as the player.
10. Many tracks suffer from slowing down and extreme lag.
11. The PlayStation 2 version costed full retail price ($39.99) when the PC version costed less ($19.99) even though both versions are identical.
12. Apparently, Rocket Racer is depressed in this game, while he was happy for you in the first game!
13. When you collect all 35 golden bricks, you unlock nothing except for fireworks in Sandy Bay.

4. The Xalax had their own sets made alongside appearing in this game.
